Gyms in Toronto: Getting Energized at eMbody Fitness

My third stop on my quest to stay in shape and help you make informed fitness choices was eMbody Fitness. Rather than try a specific class, I took advantage of their 5-day free trial offer and was able to have the full eMbody member experience.

The Space

eMbody Fitness is a full-service gym located midtown on Eglinton Avenue West. Members have 24-hour access to the club with their key fob, and staff are available to assist during business hours. When you walk into eMbody for the first time, you are immediately taken in by the warm, luxurious environment. The dark hardwood floors, the spacious well-appointed bathrooms and low lighting contribute to the country club feel. There’s no formal reception area, as the click of your key fob at either one of the two private entrances checks you in.

The Fitness Experience

During my 5-day trial membership, I took the opportunity to try three different group fitness classes — Skinny Jeans; Cardio, Core and More; and Spinning.

The first group fitness class I experienced was the Skinny Jeans class.  The name sounded a little daunting, but I was assured that the class was ideal for those who aspire to look great in their jeans. For a full hour we ran through a series of exercises to tone the legs, core and butt. The next day, I tried Cardio, Core and More, a full body-conditioning class. Again, the class was a full hour and started with weight training for the arms, chest, shoulders and back. We then moved on to lunges, squats and mountain climbers for the the legs and finished with a variety of crunches and planks to strengthen the abs. I took a break on day three to let my sore body recover. On day four I was back on the spinning bike for an hour-long journey through rolling hills, interval training and sprints. Finally on my last day, I worked out on the elliptical trainer as I watched Live with Kelly; My personal television set distracted me for the half hour that I sweated it out. (I was not disappointed to only watch half the show because I still miss Regis.)
I was exhausted by the week’s end but a little disappointed that I did not have enough time to try one of the TRX Suspension Training or Gravity Training classes.
