When the kids need a haircut, there are three things you want: a quick cut, a good cut, and a positive experience that will bode well for future cuts. My son and I recently paid a visit to Melonhead’s flagship location at Yonge and Lawrence for a low-key, kid-friendly hair care experience.
A Hair Salon for Kids
When you take a child in for a haircut, you know there’s a small window of time to work with. It’s not easy to keep a child still and entertained long enough to get a good haircut, and the younger the child the harder it is. It takes a certain amount of experience with children to cut their hair quickly and well. That’s why choosing a children’s salon can make the experience virtually painless.
A fixture at Yonge and Lawrence since 2001, Melonhead offers great cuts in a fun, kid-friendly environment. Young patrons can choose to sit in one of several custom designed carousel-type seats that include a fire engine, an airplane, a pony and more. Television screens quietly display some low-key preschool entertainment aimed at keeping the kids distracted long enough to get their hair cut. And the licensed hairstylists, many moms themselves, are experts at reassuring nervous tots and moms alike.
Be warned: the shop carries a selection of small toys, stickers and books right as you walk in. If you and your child tend to fall into a power struggle over purchases, you might want to prepare your child in advance for what your visit will or will not include.
At the end of the cut, girls get a fancy glitter treatment while boys have an option for styling gel. For the first-time baby cuts, you’ll receive a certificate and keepsake lock of hair. For my son, the highlight of the cut is a sugar-free lollypop he gets at the end.
While it’s a good idea to call ahead for an appointment, a stylist is often able to accommodate walk-ins.
hair care for kids
Kids’ hair is quite delicate and can be hard to manage. That’s why Melonhead has developed their own line of hair care products, which are available in the store. They include shampoos, conditioners, hair gel and detangler. Their SLS-free products are made locally with no-tear ingredients.
Does your child spend a lot of time in a pool? Then try out their Swimmer’s Shampoo. The extra mild shampoo removes excess chlorine that can damage hair. The Fuzzy Wuzzn’t Detangler is one of their most popular products. Spray it on after washing to help keep hair fuzz and tangle-free. The Stickum Texturizer is a flexible styling product meant for short hair styles, particularly those spiky boy cuts. It also helps keep curly hair frizz-free. And for those creative hairstyles, the Anti-Gravity Hair Goo gives firm hold all day.
